NFL in Thirty-Seven

NFL FootballI checked my countdown calendar widget today and folks, believe it or not, there are only THIRTY SEVEN DAYS until NFL football begins with the Hall of Fame (pre-season) game!!! 37!!! Whoopeee!! Seriously. Can't wait.

And the best part? I think my Bills have a very solid team to begin the year! Lots of optimism here in Western New York. Check out what I have been writing in the off-season at our Buffalo Bills Review Articles page.

Bring on NFL football!!!

Trade Deadlines and Free Agency

It's that time of year again, in fact this year it's one week of craziness in my two favorite sports.

On the one hand, the NHL has set tomorrow at 3pm as the deadline to deal players. A couple trades have already occurred, more will come tomorrow. The NHL is pretty good at keeping things fresh, to be sure. People get caught up in the frenzy of the deadline as Sabres' GM Darcy Regier says above.

The main name on the board for the Sabres is all-star defenseman Brian Campbell. (Note: had my sister have been a boy, that would have been her name!) Campbell is fantastic, and could be a foundational piece for the Sabres for years to come, but for some reason, they have not come to terms on an extension. He's set to be a free agent come July 1st of this year, so the Sabres are certainly considering a trade in order to get something out of losing him (if he were to choose to leave).

On Friday, we have the other side of things. Free agency begins Friday Feb 29th for the NFL. That means players whose contracts have expired can shop around to the highest bidder. Last season the Bills knew exactly who they wanted, and they got them within half a day of the free agency period starting gun! Will that happen again? Not sure. We had some big name guys who were set to leave last year, not so much this year. And there aren't a lot of big name players on the market who have generated the press you might expect leading up to such a deadline.

One deadline ends with a frenzy, the other begins with a frenzy. And all in one week!

So, stay tuned, I'll probably have a report here, and definitely on my Buffalo Bills site.

Buffalo Bills Things

Toronto, CanadaFor those of you who do not regularly follow along at my Buffalo Bills podcast website... I posted a few things there this week and just thought I'd link to them here. First I wrote an article responding to all the speculation about the Bills moving to Toronto. Then we did a special edition of the BBR where we talked about that and more.

Check it out if you are so inclined...

18-1*

Patriots' Coach Bill BelichickI'm a little late to the party here, but I wanted to get some of my thoughts on the "cheating" scandal(s) that surround the New England Patriots.

News has surfaced that the Patriots may have video taped the St. Louis Rams' walk-through practice the day before the Super Bowl in 2002. That was the one where the Pats managed to somehow upset the heavily favored Rams. The Rams offense was just sensational that season, and somehow, the Pats had the answer - enough to have a 14-3 halftime lead! It ended with the Pats kicking a FG to win it, and stun the world. Of course, then they went on to win two Super Bowls in the next three seasons.

But all this talk - and hard evidence - of the Patriots finding unethical, against-the-rules ways to get these wins, made me notice a couple things.

First, the Pats were 11-5 in that first Super Bowl season, finishing 14-5 with the stunning Super Bowl victory. Then, for some reason, they didn't even make the playoffs the next year. They finished 9-7, in a three-way tie with the Jets and Dolphins. (Poor Bills...) :-( By a tie-breaker, they were excluded from the playoffs.

Perhaps they were trying to do it "by the book"? Well, that didn't work.

So here are the following seasons' results. (I'll include those first two as well.)
  • 2001: 14-5 (won Super Bowl)
  • 2002: 9-7 (no playoffs)
  • 2003: 17-2 (won Super Bowl)
  • 2004: 17-2 (won Super Bowl)
  • 2005: 11-7 (lost divisional round ... and maybe got a conscience? or... just didn't cheat as well?)
  • 2006: 14-5 (lost championship round)
  • 2007: 18-1 (LOST SUPER BOWL!) :-)

Those are impressive win/loss totals. 100-29. Four Super Bowls. (But they did not win them all...) ;-) Could they all need to be followed with an asterisk? Should it read 100-29*?

Not sure yet. There is talk that a more thorough investigation could be coming. One run by the US and various state governments.

What will the NFL and the Patriots do then? The games have been played. Is an asterisk enough? Can they take the Lombardi Trophies away from the Pats? Can they give them to their unethically-beaten opponents? Do they want them? Then they would have a championship with an asterisk.

Not sure if fines, suspensions, or even jail time will befall the New England Patriots, but it could get pretty ugly over this off-season.

The last minute blemish to their perfect season (and the shenanigans that followed by Belichick, Brady, and Moss) might be only the very start of a long, dark off-season for the Patriots.

Why The Super Bowl Is Not A Big Deal

Vince Lombardi Trophy - Super Bowl
At least, not to me. And, I actually mean that more as a compliment than a slam. Let me explain.

When it comes to the playoffs, and especially the finals of most sports there is an intensity like no other time during the season. The players step it up, the fans step it up... the atmosphere and the play on the field, court, ice are electric. There's a big difference for example between a regular season hockey game and a playoff hockey game of any level, let alone the Stanley Cup Finals or especially a Game Seven of the finals!

Other sports are the same way. Looks at the fantastic athletic event that is March Madness in college basketball. Play in the regular season may be exciting for die-hards, but come March, tiny schools who weren't even on the national fan or media's radar are suddenly playing like - and becoming? - champions.

There's just a different level to the playoffs in most sports.

Except the NFL.

I don't mean that as a knock on the NFL players, coaches, fans or anything. Again, it's really more of a compliment. I don't know if it's because there are fewer games, or because of the sheer intensity of the sport, but I believe every NFL game offers the same level of competition, energy, atmosphere, and fun for the fan. Now, there are some that are a small step up. The Bills hosted their first Monday night game in over a decade this past season and their stadium was rockin'! Fans were totally pumped up. The team played out of their minds. But what for? Just a regular game.

This is my point. The NFL has the best overall product because every game can be - and usually is - as intense as if it were for the ultimate championship.

But then we have the Super (Hype) Bowl. Two weeks of incessant media hype, covering every story from every possible angle ad nauseam. We don't watch much TV around here lately, so actually I haven't been bombarded as much this year as past years. But it's still there. I've caught the fringe stuff. And tonight there will be all the flashiness that the NFL wants to bring to their "showcase event".

Does that make it better? Does that make it a more competitive game? Do we really need all that stuff?

In the end, I've already seen all the best games this season. (I could be surprised, but usually the Super Bowl does not live up to its hype...) The Patriots vs Dallas, Indy, and even Jacksonville in the playoffs. All the Bills games... ;-) And a handful of other very exciting competitions. Probably were better games than tonight's game will be. At least they were better than some other Super Bowls I have seen.

So, I'll stick with my vote for the NHL playoffs, March Madness, and maybe even a few others as being a bigger step up in the post season than the NFL offers. I'd rather watch most any NHL playoff series than the Super Bowl most year.

(Of course, it would help if my team was in the Super Bowl... then I might be saying, "This is going to be the best game EVER!!) ;-)

Nah. Gimme some NHL playoffs and March Madness. I'm good to go.

Crazy New Yorker!

Today was the coldest day of the winter so far here in Western New York. How did we spend it? Well, in the morning, we toyed with the idea of playing outside under the beautiful, clear, sunny skies... but eventually thought better of it. But later in the day, following the pregnant urges of my wife, I put on the parka and fired up the grill on our deck for the first time in a couple months! I was grilling hamburgers at temps in the low double digits!

Only in upstate New York, folks.

Speaking of NY... it is a complete shock to me that the Giants are in the Super Bowl. Complete. I mean, with each game I thought, "You know... they have a chance to win!" but really, in the end, no one thought they would be in the Super Bowl this year! And, even though I really don't like the Giants, I will be rooting for them to finish what they started in week 17 and put the perfect exclamation point on the year for the Patriots and for them. They will be 12-1 on the road this year (winning 11 straight) and the Pats will go 18-0 ... only to LOSE THE SUPER BOWL.

Man that would be awesome. And I don't even like the Giants! :-)

So, from the Frozen North.. here's hopin' the Giants can pull off one more major upset in the Super Bowl.

(Did I just say that????!!)

NFL Playoffs Start With A Bang!

I have really just one favorite team in the NFL. It's the Bills. Really I'm not even much of an NFL fan besides any game that directly impacts the Bills. However. I do have two other teams that I would say I almost always root for.

And one was playing tonight.

First are the Bills. Maybe #1-1000 are the Bills. But 1001 is the Bengals (with my roots being in Southern Ohio) and #1002 is the Jacksonville Jaguars... probably only due to some cool people we met down there who befriended our family on one of our tours who are HUGE Jags fans, and... well... I just like them.

Jacksonville has a great, balanced team. Probably the most complete team in the playoffs. No real superstars, but enough greatness to beat anyone. They were 11-5, but should have been 12-4. (Took the last game off.) And they can do it all. Stifling defense, solid, productive offense... even great special teams. And two fantastic running backs, along with the league's 3rd rated QB this season.

And, it showed. Tonight they took a commanding 28-10 lead into the 4th quarter until on 4th down and 12 on the first play of the 4th quarter, the comeback began. Yes folks... an 18 point deficit was completely erased and the Jags were down 29-28 VERY late in the 4th.

But on 4th down and 2, with just about 2 minutes left in the game, Jags QB David Garrard calls his own number, and not only gets the first down... he gets THIRTY-TWO yards for a HUGE first down, and gets them WELL into FG range. Huge. HUGE.

This forced Pittsburgh to take their remaining time outs, and after getting the ball to the two yard line, Jacksonville set up for the go-ahead FG.

They made it!! Whoohooo!! Game ended with the defense forcing a Roethlisberger fumble, and the Jags move on... likely to face New England in round #2. Should be a much better game than you might imagine. Except that Belichek does just great with two weeks to prepare.

Anyway... fun start to the playoffs. I probably won't see much if any of the other two games though. :-) Going to hang out with some friends tomorrow. Will probably have kid duty and just be catching up with them.

So... on to round two! Go Jags! :-)

State Of The Union?

Patriots vs Giants

In a somewhat surprising move, the NFL decided to allow CBS and NBC to simulcast the Patriots vs Giants game that was scheduled to be broadcast on the NFL Network this Saturday night. The NFL is not known for its generosity, but the NFL Network is in such a small percentage of homes, and this game is of pretty significant (sports-world) historical significance, so it will be shown on all three networks.

New England coach Bill Belichick said, "It'll be like the State of the Union, on every channel."

If you'd like to read more, check out this article.

The Giants don't stand a chance, but I would laugh for DAYS if they managed to defeat the undefeated Pats. They are the least likeable "great" team I have ever seen in my couple decades of sports fandom. They are arrogant, obnoxious, self-absorbed, and really just a bunch of jerks. Very hard to root for them. It's hard enough to just stomach them at all.

That said, the Giants don't stand a chance.

But, not many more people can watch the annihilation of yet another 2007 NFL team. And the unsportsmanlike taunting and gloating of another.

Great TV, eh?

Some Teams...

There are just some teams that I never like to see win. I know, I should root for a team instead of against the other one, but ... that's just the way it is.

Tonight I am rooting for probably my second favorite team, the Cincinnati Bengals, but it's not looking good for them. The Steelers (one of those teams I never want to see win...) are getting lots of "homer" calls, and it's pretty annoying. Probably wouldn't be as annoying if I didn't like the Bengals and so strongly dislike the Steelers...

Just so it's in writing, here are the teams I always root against (and if they are both playing, I usually just don't even watch the game!) :-) Steelers, Cowboys, Patriots, Giants, Eagles, and Ravens. So yeah, remember those two Super Bowls that featured Giants vs Ravens and Eagles vs Patriots? Didn't see 'em. :-)

There are some other teams in other sports, but since it's primarily football season, I'll leave it at that.

On a more positive note... my Bills did pull out a last-second, one-point victory today! Nice job, Bills!

On Sean Taylor

The Bills play the Redskins this weekend, and the importance of the game has been seriously diminished by the killing of safety Sean Taylor. Taylor is one of the Redskins best players, leaders, and loved by all of his coaches and teammates.

A lot of people think that will motivate the Skins this weekend, but from what I have read, and especially heard and seen in press conferences and interviews, they are not thinking about football. I could be wrong, but I have a feeling the Bills will end up winning - maybe easily - and they won't get the credit for it. The Redskins are definitely mentally and emotionally somewhere else.

There is a bit of "good news" regarding the murder. I found this article today which says that the police have charged three suspects and detained a fourth. The "good" is that they have the people who are responsible (and confessions from them) but it's really sad that these guys are just teenagers. And, according to the story, were not intending to kill Taylor, just got "unlucky".

Not sure I'm buying that.

So, it's a really sad series of events, and certainly overshadows any of the fun of this game. It was going to be kind of fun, two 5-6 teams, Trent Edwards starting, London Fletcher playing against his old team, Derrick Dockery for the Bills doing the same... but sometimes there are things more important than football.

Picks

NFL FootballThis season I have been asked to join a panel of "experts" in predicting the outcome of each week's NFL games. So far I am in second place, behind my Buffalo Bills Review partner, Dave Drake, and another guy who are tied for first.

This week, after hearing the boys subtly add their voice to the discussion of my picks each week, I decided to let them in on it! So I made up little sheets for them to each make their picks and we'll see who ends up with the best record by the end of the season. :-) (Actually, you might be surprised... there's a good chance they will!)

It's fun to see how excited they are about it :-)

Even funnier was seeing how Alex changed a couple of his picks after announcing the games he was not going to get right - only to find out he could still change his picks up to kickoff time. :-) He's pretty cute. He now assures us that he will go 16-0 this week.

The big game of course is tonight, where our Bills face the New England Patriots. Ian and I have our Bills winning in the end (good boy, Ian!) and Alex changed that one... which will of course help him go 16-0.

We'll see!

Go Bills!

Morning Football??

This morning we slept in a bit later. Remember yesterday? Our first day on Pacific Daylight Time? Today instead of getting up at 6:30, we managed to sleep till about 7:15. :-)

We did try to just relax in bed for a while, but that didn't work. Instead, since it was Jen's birthday, I offered to bring her breakfast in bed. She accepted.

Breakfast consisted of a bowl of raisin bran, some orange/mango juice, a piece of toast, and a couple giant slices of a California navel orange. We looked for some NFL football pre-game stuff while we ate. (I had some tea in my new Apple mug as well...) :-)

It was really weird watching NFL football at 10am. Especially after waking up at 7am. :-)

(We're definitely still adjusting to the time zone...)

It was also very strange to watch football games without eating lunch or some afternoon snack. I mean... you gotta eat when there's football on, right?? We did not. We watched the two games that were on out here (the Miami/NYGiants game that was live from London, England, and the Oakland/Tennessee game) and then reheated last night's pizza for an early lunch at 11:30am.

Jen got some calls from family for her birthday, and we had a nice leisurely morning, getting ready to head out to catch the Bills game at a local sports bar.

It was a nice, relaxing, birthday morning. :-)

BUFFALO BILLS FOOTBALL IS HERE!!!

Buffalo Bills Helmets
Yes that's right... it's officially here. The Buffalo Bills 2007 season begins tonight. The first official game, although technically "pre" season. They will play the New Orleans Saints on their home turf... on national TV! That means YOU can see it. It will be on CBS at 8pm EDT. I hope you'll stop by and watch a bit. There are some exciting new players on this team.

We'll be watching Marshawn Lynch, who will get a good number of carries/touches. We'll be watching Paul Posluszny, our 2nd round pick, rookie LB. We'll be watching DT John McCargo, coming off a bad foot injury. We'll be watching new O-linemen Langston Walker and Derrick Dockery. We'll be watching Trent Edwards... rookie QB battling for the back-up job. Should get a good bit of playing time.

But mostly we're just happy to be watching!

The BILLS ARE BACK!

Go Bills!!!

Thurman Thomas in the Hall of Fame

Thurman Thomas and Marv Levy at 2007 Hall of Fame Enshrinement
If you missed it, Thurman Thomas was enshrined in the NFL Hall of Fame this weekend! That's fun stuff for Bills fans! Thurman was definitely one of the key elements of our FOUR CONSECUTIVE Super Bowls. He and Jim Kelly definitely deserve to be the first two from that team (besides Coach Marv Levy) to be added to the Hall of Fame.

There's a bunch of great stuff about Thurman online... check out the article I posted tonight at BuffaloBillsReview.com. There are several links there including a couple to videos of his speech given yesterday at the NFLHOF in Canton, OH.

He was an incredible player, and it was fun to re-live the memories as I read the articles and watched the videos this week. Congrats, Thurman!

Two Days

Bills Fans
Are you ready for some football??? Man, we are!!! I can't believe it, but by the time you are reading this, there are only TWO DAYS until the Bills start training camp! TWO DAYS!!! We'll be heading out to see them practice on Friday with the Drake family (Dave of Buffalo Bills Review fame) and perhaps another friend or two.

There is always reason for optimism this early in the season, but have a look at some stuff on my Buffalo Bills site at some of the actual reasons for optimism. I might write one more article this week as the beginning of the season approaches, but for now there's plenty of good stuff up there.

We'll be starting up our show again if not this weekend, next weekend. If you haven't checked it out yet, I encourage you too. We're have some new segments planned, a new host or two, and we'll hopefully be working in many interviews throughout the season.

Fun stuff! Football is almost here!!! WHOOHOO!!!!!

Free Agency in Sports

Chris Drury and Daniel Briere
As you most likely know by now, Chris Drury and Daniel Briere have moved on from the Buffalo Sabres to $$$Greener Pastures$$$. They were signed by two different teams (Rangers and Flyers) for a combined $84 million!!! Holy cow, that's a lot of moola! The Sabres were unable and/or unwilling to match that, and in the case of Drury, he just chose to go to the Rangers (they were his favorite childhood team) instead of stay in Buffalo (who would have matched the Rangers' offer.

So, good for those guys... at least financially. But this brings up yet again the sad state of sports with free agency and salary caps. There are many factors, and I really don't want to get into it here, but I do want to say that I am not a fan of free agency.

I understand that it is very cool for the player. They get more money for sure, they also get the chance to determine where they will play (like Drury). But both Drury and Briere were captains on the President Trophy winning Sabres (for the best record in hockey) and they left that behind (understandably, in many ways) to pursue their goals. Not those of the team.

Does any player care about the game, or the team, or the city anymore? Perhaps that is unfair. Both of these guys said they would like to stay in Buffalo. Particularly Briere. But in the end, he was offered $25 million over 5 years by the Sabres, and the Flyers offered him $52 million over 7 years.

Yeah, I would too.

I think. Part of me says I wouldn't. I would take the "paltry" $25M and stay with the team that I had helped build. I would not move the family and start over again... I would be OK with $25 MILLION DOLLARS. But, why take $25M when you can double it?!? So crazy.

It's sad that this is hurting sports in so many ways. Small market teams are unable to keep up as they can not charge as much for tickets, and don't have other sources of revenue to keep up with the larger salary caps. It's also just raising the price of tickets in general across all the sports leagues. Many sports writers are prediciting we'll just be seeing another lock out in the not-too-distant future if the NHL continues this way.

What if players decided they love the game, and love to win, and build a championship team. What if teams fairly compensated those players who made a commitment to stay with one team for their careers? We will likely never see a team that can repeat what the Bills did from 1990-1993, going to four straight Super Bowls ... mostly due to free agency.

It might sound like sour grapes, but even before we lost Drury, Briere, and even Zubrus a couple days later, I was not a fan of free agency. Maybe it's because my team is one of those "small market teams", but I think it's cause I love the idea of buildinig a team of guys you know and can root for for at least a good chunk of their careers. Now when you buy a jersey (like, #23 or #48) it's obsolete in 3 years or less.

Too bad.

The Sabres did manage to hold on to Thomas Vanek last week, matching an offer that came in from Edmonton. They were not going to lose another one! Good for them.

I read a great article on this at NHL.com today. Check it out if you've got time.

The Sabres will go on. As will the Bills, and every other team. It's the path that pro sports have chosen. I do wish there was some happy medium where players could be happy, not at the expense of the team, city, fans, owner... and vice versa. I don't think we've found that just yet.

Skyline Party (with an NFL QB???)

Skyline Chili! One of our favorite foods is Skyline Chili. It's a regional delicacy for Southwestern Ohio. Specifically from Cincinnati. There are many brands of "Cincinnati-style chili" but we like to think Skyline is the best. (Of course, Chi might tell you it's Empress Chili... but I'm sticking with Skyline.) Over the years I have taken a recipe for Skyline chili that I received from (I think?) my mother-in-law, through my sister-in-law (Jen's entire family are Skyline afficionados...) and added, subtracted, monkeyed with, and attempted to match the real deal as best I can.

I'm close... but still not quite there.

Still... it is a fantastic thing that I can make GALLONS of Skyline-like Chili in my own house!!!

Well, this weekend, we're headed to Clarence for a little family party (celebrating the graduation of one of our neices, among other things). It was requested that I make and bring the main course - Skyline Chili!!!

There are many things being celebrated this weekend. There's Megan's graduation. :-) And a church that my in-laws have lent their musical and preaching talents to on numerous occasions is celebrating 100 years of existence. So we're celebrating that with them. My in-laws will be leaving soon for their summer travels, so it will be a good-bye party of sorts... and since they'll be gone for my father-in-law's birthday and their anniversary (same day), I'm sure we'll be celebrating that too.....

But that just wasn't enough.

My mother-in-law is very gifted. She can play the piano like nobody's business. She has probably sewn (or do you just make?) THOUSANDS of quilts in her lifetime. She can sew anything. AND, she can cook. Add to that the fact that she loves to do all of those things for people, and she keeps herself pretty busy! :-) Well, she had been trying to have the Holcomb family over for dinner, where our family could join them - and we'd get to meet a (former) Buffalo Bills, NFL QB!

The problem is that little "former" word back there...

Kelly was traded to Philadelphia a while ago. His family still lives here in Buffalo area, and they attend the various functions at the Clarence Church of Christ (where Jen's family attends, and Dad was the preacher for 31 years!). Jen's Mom has been trying for awhile to get together with them again, and found out that they are headed to Philly very soon. SO...

They're coming to our party! :-)

So now we're celebrating everything above ... AND it's a "going away party" for the Holcombs! :-)

This morning as I was adding all the right seasonings to the giant vat of Skyline, I was thinking, "Kelly Holcomb - #10 for the Buffalo Bills - will get to eat my Skyline... CRAZY!" :-) It's certainly a fun addition to an already fun weekend... and as you can guess, the boys are quite excited to have a meal with KELLY HOLCOMB. :-)

I wonder if we'll get to play a little football??? :-)

So, that's part of what we're looking forward to this weekend. I'm sure I'll have some kind of a report here by Monday.

Hope your weekend is full of Skyline, family celebrations and milestones, and meals with NFL QBs also!!

Brady Restructures Contract to Bring In Moss

The comments at the bottom would suggest otherwise, but I love that Tom Brady - who some compare to Joe Montana, one of the greatest NFL QBs ever - restructred his contract (took less money this year) so that they could bring in another (potentially) great receiver. Now, Moss is doing just fine with a $3M contract!!! But Brady definitely looks like the team player that he is here.

I just wish I wasn't talking about the Patriots...

NFL Draft 2007

NFL LogoToday is the big NFL Draft! Well, today and tomorrow. The Bills have 8 draft picks in the 7 rounds this year. They should be able to get some pretty decent players. (Last season, all the players we drafted made the team, and most made pretty significant contributions.)

The funny part about the draft for the Bills is that they NEVER pick who ANYONE thinks they are going to! Ha! Last year with pick #8 we picked Donte Whitner and not one single prognosticator had forecast HIM as our #1 pick. Or ANYONE'S #1 PICK for that matter. :-)

So, there may be trades, there will be shock and surprise once pick #12 is announced... but it will be fun. And Marv and Co. will add some great talent to our already talented young team! The Bills will surprise people this year. I (almost) guarantee it. :-)

GO BILLS!

But, um... there ain't nothin' there!!!

BuffaloBills.com Post

For those of you who may find an article about the Bills and/or Sabres interesting, or worth the read... I finally posted something to my BuffaloBills.com blog for the first time since the Bills' season ended! :-) It's called Are The Bills Following in the Sabres' Footsteps? ... and... well... that's what it's about. :-)

Just thought I'd let you know. If you know what RSS is, here's the feed for the blog I keep there.

Go Buffalo! :-)
