What You Do

Estimated reading time: 2 minute(s)

A funny thing has been happening this week. Our schedule has become much more free again (which is wonderful!) and I have been able to begin connecting with some of our friends again. Be it a few quick Instant Message conversations, or e-mails, or a more lengthy phone conversation, or even better – a dinner or other in person engagement, it has been really, really great.

Also, I have had a few times where something I have written (blog, or book, or otherwise) has been an encouragement to someone at just the right time this week. (And then I have gotten to have a conversation, or hear about that encouragement at some later point.)

And on top of that, I feel like I have gotten to spend some more time with my kids and my wife that I have in a long time. We even went on a DATE last week! (And another is coming soon…) 🙂

I must say, all of this stuff rocks! 🙂

And that’s what I have been thinking this week, especially pertaining to the writing, and how God has used that to encourage people. I have been wishing again that somehow I would not need to do any other sort of “employment”, but could just count on paying my bills through my writing, and be free to just have great, meaningful conversations with friends whenever they needed me to. Wouldn’t that be a cool thing to do?? Why won’t God let me do that?!?

And each time I have thought that, I realized, “Whoa… I have that!” 🙂

The flexibility of my “job” allows me to take breaks whenever I need to chat with a friend, or write down some thoughts. This blog is an amazing thing that not only allows you to read such thoughts, but allows me to publish them instantly, and for free! So, actually, I do get to pay all of my bills “by” writing and have the freedom to connect with people whenever they or I want/need to. It just doesn’t look exactly as I’d like it to.

Yes, I would love to sell 50 copies of my book each week. Perhaps I could even have a monthly magazine or something with thousands of subscribers. Maybe I’d even get one published by someone else and sell tens of thousands of that one!? Then just live on the royalties as I continue to write and just share life with folks who are pursuing a relationship with God as I am (or, not as I am.)

I think that is what I do. (Except for the sales bit…) God just funds it differently. But otherwise, I am getting to do what I have always wanted to do.

You know, the grass really isn’t any greener…
