The NFL Network Comes to Hulu!

Following up on yesterday’s recommended Hulu show … they announced today that there is a slew of NFL content now available on their site. They even have their own channel there!

This is great news, and I hope to see more. Perhaps next season NFL GameDay will be there as well? (Come on, NFL!)

Until then, we in the Campbell home will be watching some great NFL games from the past, including some video from when our team was actually good, too! 🙂

Enjoy!

Psych is Back!

Jen and I will be watching this via Hulu.com tonight, so I thought I’d share here… in case you haven’t yet experienced Psych. It’s definitely our favorite current TV show! (You’ll love it more if you are around our age… tons of hilarious and random references to 80s pop culture.) 🙂

iPad: Apple’s Most “Magical” Device?

the iPad - Apple's most magical device?
Well it is finally here. The long-awaited, oft-rumored Apple tablet. It’s called the iPad. (iPad? Is that really the best name for it?)

Though Apple calls this new gizmo “magical,” I must admit, I’m still not impressed.

I’ve never been one calling for the tablet. I just don’t get it. I don’t need such a device. Granted, it looks amazing, and seems like it’s a lot of fun… but I don’t need it. Why was/is there such a demand for this?

Some basics:

  1. 9.7″ display, Multi-touch interface
  2. 10-hour battery life
  3. Mac OS and iPhone OS combined, runs iWork suite, iPhoto, Mail, iCal, iTunes, etc
  4. Runs all applications from the App Store (for iPhone/iPod Touch)
  5. iBook app (and store) for reading ebooks (akin to Amazon Kindle)
  6. Wi-Fi and 3G models, from $499 to $829.
  7. Unlimited data from AT&T for $29.99/mo. (Or other plans, incl. free Wi-Fi access at AT&T hotspots.)
  8. DOES NOT have phone, camera, multi-tasking (using multiple apps at once)

So, one thing I will give them is the price. I think that’s lower than most people expected, and a tad lower than I did. A ton of functionality (including some accessories) and the great multi-touch interface, only better.

But I still don’t get it.

Check out the video demo at Apple’s site. (Maybe that will help me understand?)

The device will be available in 60 days (and 90 days for the 3G models).

I will at least be planning to test drive one at our local Apple store… 🙂

Is The Apple Tablet Rumor About To Become Reality?

The Apple Tablet?
If you’ve followed this blog for very long, you know that I am a huge fan of all things Apple. In previous years (with fewer kids? fewer jobs?) I would follow the Apple rumor sites (like this one) and report diligently on the speculation of others, and even my own. (That was a pretty good one, actually… that I still think they will do… you just wait!)

Well, over all those years… a few rumors have persisted even though the rumored product or service never actually appeared. For example, the Apple phone was a long-rumored device before we were introduced to the iPhone in 2007. There are still a few unanswered rumors out there… the Beatles on iTunes… iTunes subscription service… my Apple TV… (OK, maybe that’s just my rumor.) 🙂

One that will apparently come true tomorrow is the verrrry long-awaited “Apple tablet” computer. It seems to be a perfect blend of laptop and iPhone, with the touch-screen interface and a super-portable design. Seems like it could be pretty amazing. (See leaked photo above…)

Tomorrow at 1PM ET (10AM PT, local time) Steve Jobs will be announcing the next great thing from Apple. I believe the Apple invite says, “Come see our latest creation.” Neat. I believe I will!

Recommendation: Up by Pixar

A week or two ago we all watched the Pixar movie, “Up” together as a family. It was fun to see how it kept nearly everyone’s attention throughout, with lots of fun moments sprinkled through an emotionally touching story.

I don’t use those words lightly!

When it was over, Kirstie (our 5 year old) and Julia (our 3 year old) were both crying! A lot! (Note: the funny thing was, there were some sad story lines throughout the movie, but it does end up on a relatively happy note…) Now, it could be that they were tired, too, but they were definitely affected by this story!

Pixar continues to amaze me. In an era when we really don’t want our kids to watch any movies or TV shows because of the messages they convey—directly or indirectly—Pixar makes movies that are not only “OK” to watch, they are actually helpful!

I don’t want to give away the story line, so I’ll just say that “Up” is another endearing story with many teachable moments, and just plain FUN! Many hilarious, laugh-out-loud moments. (I mean that literally, not the “texting” version of that phrase…) I don’t think I could recommend a movie more.

AND, for those of you who still have room to buy stuff for Christmas (or still need to buy stuff for Christmas…) you can click on the DVD cover in this post and click over to the digital version from Amazon and get it delivered in time for Christmas. (I don’t know if they can still get the DVD there on time…) Or, there’s always iTunes

Enjoy!

(PS… for the adults… we also highly recommend Star Trek! Another fine movie from 2009!)

Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!

Snow!We have been getting snow the last few days here, and last night it finally turned into “real” snow! (The kind that comes down in big, fluffy flakes and starts piling up on everything quickly!) And it looks like there’s more where that came from!

I love snow! It just makes me smile, and even fairly giddy! 🙂 Not sure how it does that for me, since most folks my age seem to have lost the excitement and joy that slow-falling snow can bring. But somehow, it does! And it’s so fun to see the kids bubbly with excitement, too, as they stand at the door taking in the wonder of the new-fallen snow. So fun!

Not sure if we’ll have a “white Christmas”, but the current weather certainly helps it feel more like Christmas time! Time to play some Christmas music… 🙂

The Ultimate Showdown?

Could Super Bowl XLIV feature two undefeated teams??
It has been a dismal season for my favorite professional sports franchise. (It was actually kind of difficult to label them “professional” just now…) There are some reasons beyond likely their control (an insane amount of serious injuries to some of their best players) but overall they continue their bumbling ways. It will be surprising if they reach as high as 7 wins this year. (They have been 7-9 for the past three seasons in a row!)

So, I have mostly lost all interest in the NFL season due to their ineptitude. However, there is one potentially amazing story line that has my interest…

After coming from 17 points behind in their game Sunday night, the Colts remained undefeated at 9-0. It was a stunning turn of events (and the game featured two teams that are CLEARLY far superior to the team I watch every week…) culminating with Indianapolis preserving their so-far unblemished record.

A couple weeks ago, in the other conference, a similarly talented team posted their own incredible come-from-behind win as the New Orleans Saints defeated Miami 46-34, after being behind by 21 points! Incredible!!

Both teams do have a few tough games remaining, but so far it hasn’t seemed that anyone can actually finish 60 minutes with more points than them. Both have great QBs (with other fine supporting offensive players) and solid defenses that make big plays when needed.

And they are both in different conferences, which means they won’t play each other until a possible Super Bowl showdown.

Here are their remaining schedules:

Indianapolis
at Baltimore
at Houston
Tennessee
Denver
at Jacksonville
NY Jets
at Buffalo
New Orleans
at Tampa Bay
New England
at Washington
at Atlanta
Dallas
Tampa Bay
at Carolina

Obviously, going undefeated is always an almost impossible task, but New Orleans seems to have the tougher road to get there. Playing the Patriots, and playing four division games (against pretty tough opponents). Both teams finish on the road (but so far this season opposing teams are 3-1 in Buffalo, and that likely won’t improve much before their January 2nd contest there.)

It will be tough, but it’s definitely possible that this year’s Super Bowl could feature not just one but two undefeated teams playing for the Lombardi trophy, and the first 19-0 season!

That’s what I’m rooting for… Go Saints and Colts!

(Although, I’m pretty happy for my “other” home team, the Bengals. They’re having a pretty fun season, too. So, if either of those teams has already lost… I’m rooting for Cincinnati!) 🙂

NHL Hockey is Back… with a QUADRUPLE-Header!

The 2009-2010 NHL season begins this Thursday, October 1st! We are looking forward to that here in the Campbell home. Our team (the Sabres) does not start until Saturday, but there will be plenty of hockey to watch before that!

I went to versus.com yesterday to see if they were carrying any opening night games, and was excited to see a double-header scheduled for Thursday night. Imagine my excitement when I kept reading!

Thursday
6:30 Capitals at Bruins
10:00 Sharks at Avalanche

Friday!
Noon Red Wings vs Blues (Helsinki, FIN)
3:00 Panthers vs Blackhawks (Stockholm, SWE)

Yes, folks, that’s right! A quadruple-header!! Awesome. Can’t wait.

Versus carries two or three NHL games per week during the season, but not usually four within 24 hours!

Enjoy!

Bulletin: Nintendo Wii Now Sporting Lower Price

Wii now sporting lower priceI got a marketing email from Amazon.com today that I decided to pass along here on my blog. I have a long list of things in every area of life at the moment, which has prevented me from sharing thoughts and stories here that I really want to share, but this figures to be pretty short, so…

Apparently, the price of the Wii video game system has been lowered from $249 to $199. That’s neat. Our boys are saving up their paper route money to buy a Wii … they will be very glad to hear this news! 🙂 I clicked the link in the email to see the price for myself, and it’s true… and the cool part about Amazon is, you can get the same item from third-party sellers (new and used) usually for even less. I believe I saw a low price of $144.

So if you’ve always wanted a Wii but never got around to it… perhaps now is a good time? I guess they’re gearing up for the holiday season already!

If you want to check it out, just click this page at Amazon.com.

(AND… full disclosure… because I am an Amazon affiliate… a small commission will be credited to GregsHead.net with your purchase! Win win. Love those.)
